Frequently asked questions
What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single indirect tax on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced many older taxes like VAT, service tax and excise duty, and is collected at each stage of the supply chain.
What are the current GST rates in India?
After the GST 2.0 reform effective 22 September 2025, the main slabs are 0% (nil), 5%, 18% and a 40% rate for a narrow set of luxury and sin goods. The old 12% and 28% slabs were largely removed, with most items moving to 5% or 18%. A few special rates such as 3% (gold and silver) and 0.25% (rough diamonds) also exist.
How do I calculate GST on a price?
Multiply the price by the GST rate and divide by 100. For example, GST on ₹1,000 at 18% is ₹180, so the final price is ₹1,180. This calculator does it automatically.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide the GST-inclusive price by (1 + rate/100). For example, ₹1,180 at 18% gives a base price of ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180. Select "Remove GST" and the calculator does this for you. Note that you cannot simply subtract 18% from ₹1,180, because the GST was charged on the base price, not on the final price.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?
For a sale within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (collected by the Centre) and SGST (collected by the state). For a sale between two states, or an import, the full amount is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same either way.
Is the discount applied before or after GST?
Before. A normal trade discount reduces the taxable value, and GST is then calculated on the reduced amount. That is how this calculator treats the discount field.
Why is there a round-off option?
Many invoices round the grand total to the nearest rupee. When you tick the option, the calculator shows the round-off amount as a separate line so your books still match.
Can I use this for services as well as goods?
Yes. The calculation is the same. Just pick the correct rate for your service. Most services are taxed at 18%, but the rate depends on the SAC code.
How do I find the right GST rate for my product?
Find your product's HSN code (or SAC code for services) and check the rate in the latest GST notification on the official GST portal, or ask your chartered accountant. The Rate Guide tab gives a quick overview of the slabs.
Can I claim input tax credit (ITC) on the GST I pay?
Registered businesses can generally claim ITC on GST paid for business purchases and set it off against the GST they collect on sales, subject to the conditions in the GST law. Final consumers cannot claim it.
Is my data safe? Is this calculator free?
It is completely free. All calculations happen in your own browser, and nothing is sent to a server. Your last few calculations are stored only on your device, and you can clear them any time.
Is this calculator a substitute for professional tax advice?
